Panama's New President Ricardo Martinelli

In his acceptance speech today at the Atlapa convention center, Panama's new president Mr. Ricardo Martinelli promised he would make Panama the best country in Latin America to do business. That any and all foreign investors wishing to do business in Panama would be welcome and our "doors would be open". He assured his public that this was one way to create jobs and improve the economy.
He also mentioned that he would keep a promise his vice president Mr. Juan Carlos Varela made during their campaign by providing citizens of the third age who are not available for social security a payment of $100 a month. President Martinelli and his vice president Varela have also made promises of increasing the pay of policemen, since they are all underpaid.
On his agenda he will be improving the transportation by constructing a Metro such as the one that was built in the Dominican republic. Panama's transportation system is quite inefficient and as he mentioned during his campaign, most employees spend over 4 hours a day commuting to their jobs and that creates a lack of education at the most important level: the household.
Also on Martinelli's agenda is improving the jails, taking legal actions towards juvenile delinquents and trying them as adults, improving the agricultural process by creating incentives for sustainable farms in panama in order to produce better products to its people at a better price.
Also of major importants in president Martinelli's agenda is to rebuild many of the schools in rural areas around the country which president Torrijos' administration was not able to complete. Martinelli is a very successful businessmen and has owned and operated a very popular supermarket chain Super 99 among many other business ventures he manages.
